For Chicago and the North By W. C. EGAN EDITOR'S NOTE.-People who live in the cold Northwest may think it useless to attempt growing roses, but, as Dr. Bailey says, "the success of the rose in this country is very largely a question of the selection of adaptable varieties." The Lake Fcrest section, on the west shore of Lake Michigan and north of Chicago, is typical of a large area to the north and west. In this section there is no one better able to speak from broad experience than W. C. Egan, the eminent horticulturist of Highland Park. In response to our request for a list of roses best suited to his cold country, he very generously sent us a contribution which, without further comment, we are most happy to present to our readers.
