Gravel Walks

Gravel walks are made over the same foundation recommended for cement paths, excepting that a slight crown is advised so that moisture passing through the surface will drain off instead of causing the path to sink. The surface layer of gravel must be deeper in the middle than toward the edges, the reason for this being that gravel is not a solid material and tends to wear down toward the edges with usage. A thickness of 6 inches in the center and 3 inches along the edges will prove satisfactory and will become level, in time, with usage.

A cinder walk is constructed the same way as a gravel path but is not nearly so desirable and very dirty. [233]
