Among those vines grown principally for their foliage effect the English Ivy (Hedera helix) is upper- [207] most in most people's affections. It is, unfortunately, a very slow grower and must be encouraged as much as possible by keeping the soil cultivated and fertilized. For the first few years after planting it is well to give the plants some winter protection. It is said to be hardy, in locations that are somewhat sheltered, as far north as Massachusetts. A northern exposure suits English ivy best, and it prefers a partially shady situation, in fertile soil. Propagation is by cuttings taken any time during the summer and rooted in a shaded frame or greenhouse.
