Shrubs and Vines: Ampelopsis

Ampelopsis Veitchii, Boston Ivy, and Ampelopsis Quinquefolia, Virginia Creeper, are well known and popular vines for covering the walls of houses, they attach themselves firmly to stonework, grow fairly rapidly and turn brilliant shade of crimson in the autumn. The Boston Ivy has a more trim appearance than the Virginia Creeper, the latter being more desirable where a vine having a more informal habit of growth is required.

Evonymus Radicans and the broader-leaf variety is grown for its foliage effect. It is evergreen and has dark glossy leaves and is excellent for covering low [209] walls also for use in rockeries. The height eventually attained is about 20 feet but it is a very slow grower and should not be selected for use where a tall vine is needed. It is easily transplanted but will only succeed on North, east or western exposures, southern aspects are too hot. Evonymus grows well in the shade and can be used as a ground cover in shady or semi-shaded places.
