Vines Valued Especially for Their Bloom

In this class of vines the wistaria and the clematis are of great value. The clematis is perhaps the most widely grown of the two. They are useful for covering porches, trellises, arbors, garden walls and small buildings and do best in rather light soils that are rich but well drained. An annual top dressing of manure is a great help in the production of a luxuriant top growth. The well-known paniculata variety which blooms in August and September is a rapid and vigorous grower and thrives in almost any soil in sun or shade and last but not least is unusually free from insect pests and diseases. Prune clematis paniculata in the winter no later than the end of March.
