Clethra Alnifolia, Sweet Pepper Bush. The fra- [195] grant white flowers are produced in clusters during July and August. It thrives in sun or shade and is well adapted to naturalistic treatment and does best in a moist soil. It can be planted in masses, or individually as a specimen; growth is slow but the bush is not subject to insect pests.

Colutea Arborescens, Bladder Senna. Is of use as a specimen shrub and for mass plantings where a tall-growing bush is desired, it attains a height of 10 feet, is a rapid grower, deep rooted and rather difficult to transplant, except when small. The yellow shaped flowers appear in late May or early June and the fruit which follows is a curious inflated pod.

Cornus Stolonifera, Red-twigged Dogwood.

Grows to a height of about 8 feet; it is hardy and thrives in any soil and in sun or shade. Its small, white flowers are borne in May, the foliage is fairly good, but its chief beauty is the red branches which are especially attractive in winter. Unfortunately, it is somewhat subject to San José scale which can be combated by spraying with lime sulphur or whale oil soap during the dormant period. For spray formula see Chapter VIII.
