Deutzia is one of the most beautiful and popular flowering shrubs, is easily grown, and blooms abun- [196] dantly in early summer. Deutzia requires very little cutting back, but it is advisable to occasionally thin out the old wood when the blooming period is over. It is easily propagated from cuttings.

Varieties. Gracilis, heavy bloomer, dwarf bush, white flowers, Lemoinei, white flowers, early bloomer, Pride of Rochester, double white, Crenata rosea plena, double flowers tinged pink.

Exochorda Grandiflora, also called the Pearl Bush because its unopened flowers resemble pearls. They are pure white and come in May. The bush grows to a height of about 8 feet, is a slow grower and thrives in any average garden soil. Its habit of growth is unattractive and to appear at its best requires to be associated in the shrubbery with other bushes.
