Teas and Hybrid Teas

Teas and hybrid teas are not pruned until April when the buds begin to swell. The canes of the tea varieties must be cut back one third of their length and the lateral growths pruned to one or two buds. The pruning of hybrid teas differs somewhat with the variety, but a general rule to follow is to prune the shoots back to from 4 to 6 inches, depending upon their vigor.

CLIMBERS Climbing varieties which do not bloom again in the fall may be pruned any time from August to March.

Remove a few old canes each season, beginning after the vine is two years old and so encourage the growth of new wood. Cut back slightly to keep the growth compact and within bounds, and shorten the laterals to one or two buds on each.
