Light yellow balsam, with clumps of the dainty, lacy, blooms of the blue lace flower planted in front of the balsam, with masses of sky-blue larkspur on either side, followed by group plantings of white phlox and bordered with alyssum or candytuft, is an attractive combination. If desired, the plantings of yellow balsam may be repeated back of the white phlox.
French Marigold, variety Golden Ball, placed in front of the taller growing African Marigold, variety Lemon Queen, combines well when planted with masses of pale lilac ageratum on either side. Calendulas may be used instead of marigold, if desired, or they may be combined with Paris daisy to give a white and gold effect. White Scabiosa planted on either side of yellow snapdragon, with clumps of Azure Fairy Scabiosa adjoining is another blue and yellow color scheme. Salpiglossis is one of the most beautiful annuals, but it must be planted close together and in masses, to be seen at its best. The white and gold variety next to calendulas or primrose phlox drummondi grandiflora is another yellow and white combination, to which either ageratum or rose and gold salpiglossis may be added if desired. Lilac larkspur with masses of white and gold salpiglossis on either side followed by purple [21] verbena or petunias and bordered with alyssum. Or the white Princess Alice Stock may be used for a background of adjoining groups of deep purple petunias and purple verbenas. This is very effective, and where space permits, a few groups near by of gladioli, lilac and cream, may be added to give more height and background. Heliotrope, adjoining lemon verbena and rose geraniums intermingled and planted in front of mignonette, will add a delicious fragrance to the garden especially noticeable after a rain. A border of either alyssum or lilac candytuft will be a great addition. Pale pink gypsophila and white snapdragons planted together are lovely bordered with the pale blue flowers of nigella or blue lace flower planted directly in front of the snapdragon, and a border of alyssum. Mix the seed of gypsophila elegans alba and shirley poppies, and sow them in any places that are bare and unplanned for. The dainty white flowers of gypsophila combine beautifully with the gay pinks and carmines of the poppies.
