The Perennial Garden: Kaempferi

Iris Kaempferi, Japanese Iris. Iris Kaempferi comes from Japan and Siberia. It is hardy, blooms in June and July, any good soil that contains no lime [67] will meet its demands, but it luxuriates in moist situations. It is very well adapted for naturalizing in clumps near streams; bloom often fails if a dry spell precedes the flowering period; in this case artificial watering should be supplied two weeks before this period. Iris Kaempferi must be planted a little deeper than the German varieties, and the best time to plant is from August 15th to September 15th or very early in spring.

Iris Pseudacorus, Yellow Flag. Grows wild in parts of Europe and is the only iris that does well in marshy land. Its flowers come in May and June.

Varieties of German Iris. Pallida Dalmatica, lovely pale lilac, Queen of May, rosy lilac, La Tendresse, lavender, very fine, Flavescens, pale yellow, Madame Chereau, white edged lilac, Honorabilis, yellow and brown, Purple King, purple, Violet Queen, pale violet, with darker shadings, Juniata, deep lilac. Japanese Iris: Perfection, white with blue markings, Kuro-Kumo, purple, Kameto, deep blue, Delici, lavender, L. S. Ware, dark garnet.
