Veronica, Speedwell. Veronica Spicata blooms in July, and its spikes of dark blue flowers are showy when they are seen in masses. This is the most effec- [79] tive of the taller growing varieties that are suitable for the garden. Veronica may be propagated by seed sown when it ripens, or by division of the roots made in spring only; while it is hardy it is not classed among the hardiest perennials, so, therefore, spring planting is safer. Give ample winter protection, which is necessary to carry the plants safely through severe winters. Veronica prefers a rich soil and plenty of sun, although it will bloom in partial shade.

Veronica Spicata is the best variety-dark blue.
