Varieties. Variety polygonatum multiflorum is the most desirable kind, bearing pendulous white flowers in June. It is a native of Europe. Variety biflorum also blooms in June and is a native of this country.

Primulas, or Hardy Primroses, in all varieties may be used. Directions for their culture may be found in Chapter III. Their blooming season is April and May.

Plumbago, Leadwort. Plumbago is a dwarf, spreading plant, bears deep blue flowers that come in September. It is not very hardy and sometimes winter kills in severe winters. Readily increased by cuttings and division of the roots made in spring only. Variety. Larpentæ.

Saponaria, Soapwort. Saponaria is a low-growing, trailing plant and is covered with pink flowers in May. It is easily grown, requiring no special care when once [116] it becomes established and is increased both by seeds and division of the roots.
