(from karpos, a fruit, and lyssa, rage; in reference to the peculiar method of opening). ORD. Amaryllideae. A very pretty little bulb, from the Cape of Good Hope. For culture, see Ixia.
C. spiralis (spiral).* fl. white, reddish outside; scapes filiform, 4in. to 6in. high, spirally twisted from the base to the middle, thence straight; perianth tube short, widening upwards; umbels two to four-flowered; spathe two-leaved. April and May. l. spiral, filiform. 1791. SYNS. Crinum spirale, Strumaria spiralis. (B. M. 1383.)
