Gillenia
(named after Arnoldus Gillenius, a botanist of the seventeenth century). ORD. Rosaceae. A genus comprising two species of hardy perennial herbs, natives of Northern United States. Flowers axillary and terminal, on very long peduncles. Leaves sub-sessile, trifoliolate; leaflets stalked, serrated. Gillenias are of easy culture, in a rather moist peaty soil, with partial shade. Increased readily by dividing the roots, in spring. G. stipulacea (stipulaceous). fl. white. June. l. lanceolate, deeply incised. h. 1ft. to 2ft.
G. trifoliata (three-leaved).* fl. red to white, in panicles; calyx persistent, becoming red after the petals have fallen. June. l., stipules linear, acuminated, entire. h. 1 1/2ft. 1713. (B. M. 489, under name of Spiraea trifoliata.)
