(from lasios, rough; in allusion to the prickly surface). ORD. Aroideae (Araceae). A monotypic genus. The species is a robust, marsh-loving, stove herb, requiring similar culture to Anthurium (which see, on p. 85, Vol. I.). L. heterophylla (variable-leaved). A synonym of L. spinosa. L. spinosa (spiny). fl., spathe 6in. to 10in. long, the tube 1 1/4in. to 2in. long, the blade very long, narrow, convolute above; spadix cylindrical, obtuse, 3/4in. to 1 1/4in. long, when fruiting 2 1/2in. to 3 1/4in. long; peduncle 8in. to 12in. long. l. very variable, hastate when young, when old more or less deeply pedate-pinnatipartite, 8in. to 12in. long and broad, the lateral partitions two or three, linear-oblong or oblong-lanceolate, more or less acuminate, narrowed towards the base; petioles 8in. to 20in. long. Caudex 1 1/4in. thick, more or less densely prickly. India. SYN. L. heterophylla. Cyrtosperma Martveieffianum is probably identical with this.
