Begonias. Tuberous Begonias enjoy a sheltered nook in which they will not be so fully exposed to driving rains and winds and will receive relief from the direct rays of the sun. Therefore in most shady gardens they are quite an indispensable addition where their pretty flowers that come in white, pink, yellow and crimson show off to good advantage, and are especially lovely when they are planted in front of a background of green or intermingled in a bed of ferns. The tubers may be purchased reasonably at most seed stores and as the process of raising one's own stock from seed is slow and rather difficult it is more desirable to buy the tubers "ready-made." They should be started indoors in March or April at which time they may be planted into flats containing a layer of broken pots in the bottom for drainage, and soil composed of any ordinary garden soil and equal parts of sand.
