Outdoor Bulb Culture: Muscari

Muscari, Grape Hyacinth. Muscari is a pretty little early spring flowering bulbous plant sending up small, thickly beaded spikes. Like the crocus, it may be naturalized in large quantities wherever bulbs for this purpose are desired. They are especially effective when seen in informal colonies along stream margins, beneath the early flowering trees or in odd nooks in the rock garden. [152] They are not particular as to soil, but prefer a rich sandy one. Plant the bulbs in the autumn, 2 or 3 inches deep and 3 inches apart. Their blooming season is March and April. Muscari is very vigorous in its habit of growth and when once the bulbs are established they will take care of themselves provided the leaves are allowed to ripen.
