Lemnaceae (Natural order of very small)

A natural order of very small herbaceous plants, found floating freely on the surface of stagnant waters in all climates, but especially in temperate regions. Flowers achlamydeous, naked, or enclosed in a spathe, reduced to one or two stamens, accompanied by a sessile pistil. Lemnaceae are the smallest known Phanerogams, and are allied to Aroideae and Naiadeae. There are two genera--Lemna and Wolffia-and twenty species.
