Astelma. From a, privative, and σελμa, a crown, in allusion to the construction of the fruit. Beautiful Cape shrubs with everlasting flowers. 1728. Athrixia. So called by Mr. Ker, we presume from a, without, and eiz, hair, in allusion to the absence of hairs upon the receptacle and the stigmas of the ray. A pretty greenhouse shrub, with narrow lanceolate leaves, and bright crimson solitary heads of flowers. 1729. Xeranthemum. From ξηρoς, dry, and avθoς, a flower, on account of the dry nature of the leaves of the calyx, which retain their color and form for years. The species are popular annual flowers, of easy culture in light rich soil. They are valued for their properties of retaining their texture and color, when gathered and dried, in the manner of Gnaphalium, Elichrysum, and other genera of what are vulgarly called everlastings. 1730. Elichrysum. From ήλioς, the sun, and χρuσoς, gold, in allusion to the brilliant yellow color of the flowers. The species are much admired for the brilliancy of their flowers even in a dried state.
